Proper maintenance can save you hundreds and even thousands of dollars that you would otherwise spend for repairs and replacements. Whether your van is used for commercial or private use, it is subject to natural wear and tear. It is inevitable but steps can be taken to prolong the life of your vehicle as well as its parts.
Tires
The tires are often the most neglected part of the vehicle. It is very important however, that tires are regularly checked as this is the only direct contact your vehicle has on the ground.
- Clean your tires before you make any visual inspection. Dirt can hide any deformities and problems. Check for cuts, nicks and deformities on the sidewall.
- Check the tread wear on all tires if it is even. Rotating the tires after every 10,000 miles ensures even tread wear and prolongs the life of your tires and improves gas mileage.
- If you need to replace tires, it is recommended to replace all four tires, especially if you are changing from summer tires to winter tires or vice versa. Be sure that the tires are the same size, same tread pattern and has the same pressure.
- Pressure is very important. It is recommended that you check your tire’s pressure regularly. Uneven pressure on the tires can affect the performance of the vehicle and may even damage your suspension and fender walls.
Oil
The oil is what keeps the engine parts well lubricated. Maintenance should include checking on your oil level if it is sufficient. Otherwise, the moving parts of the engines will produce excessive friction and will cause damage. If it happens, you will be guaranteed an expensive bill for repairs.
Water/coolant
Check if there is enough water for the engine to keep it cool. This will prevent overheating in the engine. During cold seasons or winters, keep your anti freeze level topped up in the water to prevent it from freezing.
Washer Fluid
Visibility is crucial when you are driving. Checking the washer fluid can easily be ignored but not having enough washer fluid can reduce your visibility and will put you in greater risk for accidents.
Brake fluid
One of the most important maintenance checks that should be performed on your van is on the brake fluid. You want to ensure that the level of brake fluid in the reservoir is enough to keep your brakes functioning well.
These simple maintenance checks will not only help you cut back on maintenance and repair expenses. Proper and regular maintenance will also help save your life, the life of your passengers and the life of other motorists on the road.
